General Help

The proceedings can be used in either of two ways.

  • Like a Book: Just as there is in most books, the CD version of the proceedings has a Table of Contents which lists all the articles available in the proceedings. Clicking on and article's reference in the Table of Contents will load the article to your browser. Each article can be printed if you so desire by simply selecting File and Print from your browser's menu after it is displayed. Keep in mind that the authors have retained the copyright to their articles, so you can print a copy for your own use, but you cannot distribute it to others.

  • Like a Database: The proceedings can be used like a searchable database of articles. The online proceedings have a search engine that can be used to search the articles based on key words. It will display a list of articles that meets your search criteria.

Help with the Table of Contents

The Table of Contents consists of a header and a series of links to articles. Each of these is explained below:

Menu Buttons and Menus

The Table of Contents and all of the articles have a menu that provides links to the Help Page (this help page), the Search Page, the Table of Contents, and the main Contents page of the proceedings. To access this menu move the mouse over the New Orleans pictures or the menu buttons and click the mouse (left click on PC).

Your browser does not need to support Javascript to access this menu, but if it does not do so, or if you have Javascript support turned off, the graphic images will not change as you move the mouse over them. To turn on JavaScript support, go to your browser's Internet options/security menu and select JavaScript support.

Table of Contents Topic Bar

The Table of Contents lists the articles by topic.

Article References

The article titles are linked to the articles.

Help with Article Pages

Each Article consists of an article header and an article body. Each of these are explained in detail below.

Article Header

Article Title and Author Name

This section of the article header includes the title of the article and the name of the author(s). If the article is being reprinted with permission, a hot link to the reprint permission notice is included and the article title is noted with a "*".

© & Author Information

This is a link to information about the author(s), including their title and their company or organization. It may include contact information for the author, more information about the organization, or a way to obtain article reprints.

Session Information

This section will list the date and time, when available, that the session was held at the conference.

Menu Buttons

The Article Header has a menu that provides links to the Help Page (this help page), the Search Page, the Table of Contents and the main Contents page of the proceedings.

To turn on JavaScript support, go to your browsers Internet options/security menu and select JavaScript support.

Body of Article

The article consists of three parts: an abstract, the text of the article, and footnotes and references. The structure of an article may vary, but most employ the following header hierarchy:

Header Level 1

Header Level 2

Header Level 3

Topics

A Quote

Graphics and tables provided by the author are included. Some graphics were not included in the article because their resolution must be high to actually see the graphic. In such cases, a smaller graphic icon is included, which you can click on to load the full-size graphic.

Searching For Articles

The search page allows you to search for articles based on keywords. You can select a keyword to search on and then click on the SEARCH button to display the results. The result are listed in the area underneath the keywords. The articles are listed as links that you can click on to view the article. After you have viewed the article, click on the back button to reload the list.

Advanced Users

If you would like, you can view the articles in a separate window. This makes it easier to go back and forth between the articles and the search list. This can be done by clicking on the check box marked "Use separate window to display articles". All subsequent searches will list the article's hotlink so it loads in a separate window when selected.

Search Questions

Sometimes after a look at an article, clicking on the back button does not reload the search list. What is wrong?

Most likely you have the "separate window" checked (see above). When this is checked, articles appear in a separate window. Either make sure this is unchecked, or look on your desktop for the window containing the search list.

I get a message that my browser does not support javascript. What do I do to use the search engine?

This is happening for one of two reasons.
First, if you are not using at least version 2 of Netscape, Opera, or Internet Explorer, your browser does not support Javascript. You can upgrade your PC or Mac browser by installing one of the browsers on the CD.
Second, you may have Javascript turned off. Here is how to turn it on.

  • Netscape: Version 2 and 3 Select OPTIONS/NETWORK/LANGUAGES and make sure JAVASCRIPT is checked. Version 4 and 5 Select EDIT/PREFERENCES/ADVANCED and make sure Enable JavaScript is checked.
  • Explorer: In version 5, select Tools/Internet Options then click on the Security tab. Click on the Custom Level Button. Scroll through the option list until you see Scripting/Active Scripting. Select Enable. Version 4 and 3. Good Question. In Explorer Version 4 as far as we know, you can not turn Javascript off. In earlier versions this was available, but since we do not have an earlier version to test, you will have to hunt for this. It will most likely be under VIEW/INTERNET OPTIONS.

Help with Copyright and Printing of Articles

What is the copyright on the Proceedings?

Each author has retained the copyright to his or her article. Each author has granted APA and ASU the right to publish their article in these online proceedings. The form, design, and structure of the proceedings has been copyrighted by AICP/APA.

Can I print out articles?

Under the author's copyright, you can print out an article, or save a copy of an article on disk, for your own personal use or convenience. However, you can not print out or save an electronic copy of an article for distribution without the author's consent. For example you can NOT NOT print out a copy for distribution in the office or to a class. If you choose to utilize portions of a document in another document, please utilize proper citation of the original author and copyright.

Linking to the Proceedings

Are the Proceedings available online?

Yes. The 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001 proceedings are online. You can access them at http:www.asu.edu/caed/onlineplanner/proceedings. Some new articles and article corrections are available online that are not on this CD version.

Can I create a link on my page directly to one of the articles?

You can include a link on your web page to an article as long as the article is NOT displayed within a frame from your site. Framing any page of the Proceedings is a violation of AICP's ASU's and the author's copyright. It would be nice if you would provide some credit to the author for writing and providing the article and ASU for providing the article in electronic form.

Can I create a link on my page to the proceedings?

YES!!! You can include a link on your web page to the proceedings as long as the link is NOT displayed within a frame from your site. Framing any page of the Proceedings is a violation of AICP's, ASU's and the author's copyright.

< A HREF="http://www.asu.edu/caed/proceedings01">

Which should appear as follows:

Or if you choose you can utilize a reference using the site logo as follows:

< TD WIDTH=25%>
< IMG SRC="http://www.asu.edu/caed/proceedings01/IMAGES/logo01.jpg"
ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH="100" HEIGHT="100"

</TABLE>

Which should appear as follows:

NOTE:!!!

In order for the above links to work correctly your system must have a live Internet connection. If you are not connected to the Internet, the image will display but the links will not work.

This graphic is a small 3k jpg file so should load fast and add very little overhead to your site (about 1 second load time over a 28K modem line or 2 seconds over a 14K line). If you like, you have our permission to make a copy of the logo on your server for purposes of creating a link to the proceedings. You can do this by clicking on this graphic reference . This will load the "New Orleans" graphic. You can then save this image by right clicking the image of select File/Save from your browser's menu. Save the logo01.jpg file in the same directory as the web page with the link reference. You can then use the following HTML

< IMG SRC="logo00.gif"
ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH="100" HEIGHT="100"
ALT="2001 National Planning Conference Proceedings">
