This is the fifth year that the proceedings of the APA National Conference have been published on CD-ROM. This year 72 articles are included on the CD. Also included on this CD are the previous four years of the conference proceedings, totaling over 330 articles for five years of proceedings. The proceedings are also available online and receive an average of 900 hits per month. Because of the foresight of Bruce McClendon and Bill Pable, the AICP board, the Multi-Media Task Force, and ASU and the Herberger Center, the proceedings now represent a significant body of planning literature.

We thank this year's sponsor, the Fannie Mae Foundation, who has included information about their housing and community development publications. Thanks also to all the authors who took the time to prepare papers for these proceedings and for the extra effort involved in preparing them for electronic publishing. This year we received a record number of articles! Much credit for this goes to Glenn Coyne and the other members of the APA staff who helped in contacting authors and soliciting papers.

Preparing papers for publication on CD-ROM required conversion of images, graphics, and tables to a browser-compatible format. The resulting documents differ somewhat from the printed versions but every effort has been made to maintain the integrity of the original document. Additionally, the appearance of the proceedings may vary slightly from computer to computer.

This year, PowerPoint slide shows were very popular with conference presenters. We were able to include a handful of these in the publication. Since the popularity of the PowerPoint format is sure to continue, we plan to include more of them in subsequent proceedings. We will send out guidelines for next year's publication that will include instructions on how to prepare PowerPoint documents for inclusion in the proceedings.

Thanks to all the authors who took the time to prepare papers for these proceedings and for the extra effort involved in preparing them for electronic publishing. Thanks also to Glenn Coyne and the other members of the APA staff who helped in contacting authors and soliciting papers.

Sincerely,

Kim Shetter and Ray Quay

Technical

Just a few comments on the technical aspects of the proceedings:

The articles are all provided in HTML, written for HTML 3.0 compliance. They should work with Internet Explorer Versions 3 and higher and Netscape Versions 3 and higher. Some JavaScript is used for navigation buttons and in some cases to open secondary browser windows to display oversize graphics. The pages are designed to be viewed on at least an 800 x 600 display, though they will display at lower resolutions, some tables and graphics will be difficult to view. The search engine is a client side JavaScript Application. To use it you must have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
