Abstract

The deterioration and redevelopment of inner-ring suburbs are emerging as significant planning issues in the United States. With advanced GIS techniques and fine-grained local land use data, this research seeks to contribute to our understanding of inner-ring suburbs specifically, and suburban differentiation in general, through a case study of the Atlanta metropolitan region. This research examines the specific issue of the suburban decline analyzing land use and socio-economic characteristics of inner-ring suburbs. Further, this research explores policy implications for developing an alternative land use model of metropolitan areas that emphasizes maximizing the efficient use of existing resources found within inner-ring suburbs.
