:The American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is the national professional Institute within the American Planning Association. The Institute is headquartered in Washington, D.C. AICP has about 14,000 certified planners. AICP is is charged with the certification and professional development of its members – professional planners. The AICP credential is granted to planners who meet established qualifying criteria of education and planning experience and pass a stringent national written examination.

The Exam Process Overview looks at the administrative procedures attached to the credentialing process from initial application submission through test site verification, exam committee test review, and candidate results notification. Exam study materials and chapter exam preparation offerings are also covered.

The AICP exam is administered through the Chauncey Group International, a subsidiary of the Education Testing Service at over 100 test locations within the United States and foreign countries.

Michael DeVone Jones, AICP Membership and Database Manager, has directed the AICP national exam process since 1998. Mr. Jones also heads the marketing and promotion efforts for the AICP exam and works with the APA national chapters and planning schools. Mr. Jones’ efforts have garnered results as the number of exam candidates has steadily increased the last fours years from approximately 1,200 to over 1,500 in 2002. Mr. Jones also was project manager of the team of staff and online consultants that moved the AICP exam process online in 1999.

Mr. Jones has over 15 years association management experience. Mr. Jones is a featured speaker at the American Planning Association annual conference Exam Preparation Session and Chapter Professional Development Officer Exchange. Mr. Jones holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree (cum laude) from Strayer University and is studying to complete this Masters of Business Administration.
