The proceedings can be used on two basic ways.

    TOP OF PAGE

Help with Table of Contents

The Table of Contents consists of a header and a series of links to articles. Each of these is explained below:

Menu Button and Menus

The Table of Contents and all of the articles have a menu that provides links to the Help Page (this help page), the Search Page, the Table of Contents and the Proceedings main Contents page. To access this menu move the mouse over MENU button and click the mouse (left click on PC). A menu will drop down. Move the mouse over the menu item you wish to selct and click the mouse (left click on PC). Your browser must support Javascript to access this menu. If your Browser supports JavaScript, as you move your mouse over the MENU button and each of the MENU items, it lights up. Cool! If it does not light up, then your browser either does not support javascript (unlikely) or you have it turned off. To turn on JavaScript support, go to your browsers internet options/security menu and select JavaScript support.

Table of Contents Topic Bar

The Table of Contents list the articles by Topic. Each of these blue bars list a different topic. Pretty simple huh.

Article References

Each of the articles has a hotlink reference to the article page. Each line included the article title and the author(s).

Help with Article Pages

Each Article consists of an article header and an article body. Each of these are explained in detail below.

Article Header

Article Title and Author Name

This section of the article header includes the title of the article and the name of the author(s). If the article is being reprinted with permission, a hot link to the reprint permission notice is included with article title is is noted with a "*".

© & Author Information

This is a hot link to information about the author(s). At a minimum this includes their title and their company or organization. This also sometimes included a way to contact the author, more information about the organization, or a way to obtain article reprints.

Session Information

Where available, this section will list the date and time the session was held at the conference.

Menu Button and Menus

The Article Header has a menu that provides links to the Help Page (this help page), the Search Page, the Table of Contents and the Proceedings main Contents page.

Body of Article

The actual article will consist of three basic parts in this order, an Abstract, the Article, and Footnotes and References. The Heading structure of an article may vary, but most follow the following header hierarchy

Header Level 1

Header Level 2

Header Level 3

Topics

A Quote

Where provided by the author graphics and tables are included. In some articles, the resolution of the graphics needed to be so high to actually see the graphic, that the graphic was not included in the article body. In such cases, a smaller graphic icon is included, which you can click on to load the full size graphic.

Searching For Articles

The search page allows you to search for articles based on keywords. You can select a keyword to search on and then click on the SEARCH button to display the results. The result are listed in the are underneath the keywords. The articles are listed as hot links that you can click on to view the article. After you have viewed the article, click on the back button to reload the list.

Advanced Users

If you would like, you can view the articles in a separate window. This makes it easier to go back and forth between the articles and the search list. This can be done by clicking on the check box marked "Use separate window to display articles". All subsequent searches will list the article's hotlink so it loads in a separate window when selected.

Search Questions

Sometimes after a look at an article, clicking on the back button does not reload the search list. What is wrong?

Most likely you have the "separate window" checked (see above). When this is checked, articles appear in a separate window, either make sure this is unchecked, or look on your desktop for the window containing the search list.

I get a message that my browser does not support javascript. What do I do to use the search engine?

This is happening for one of two reasons.
First, if you are not using at least version 2 of Netscape , Opera, or Internet Explorer your browser does not support Javascript. You can upgrade your PC or Mac browser by installing one of the browsers on the CD.
Second you may have Javascript turned off. Here is how to turn it on.

Help with Copyright and Printing Articles

What is the copyright on the Proceedings?

Each author has retained the copyright to their articles. Each author has granted APA and ASU the right to publish their article in these online proceedings. The form, design, and structure of the proceedings has been copyrighted by AICP/APA.

Can I print out articles?

Each author has retained the copyright to their articles. Under this copyright you can print out an article, or save a copy of an article on disk, for your own personal use or convenience. However you can not print out or save an electronic copy of an article for distribution with out the author's consent. For example you can NOT print out a copy for distribution in the office or to a class. If you choose to utilize portions of a document in another document, please utilize proper citation of the original author and copyright.

Linking to the Proceedings

Are the Proceedings available online?

Yes. The 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 proceddings are online. You can access them at http:www.asu.edu/caed/onlineplanner/proceedings. Some new articles and article corrections are available online that are not on this CD version.

Can I create a link on my page directly to one of the articles?

You can inlcude a link on your web page to an article as long as the article is NOT displayed within a frame from your site. Framing any page of the Proceedings is a violation of AICP's ASU's and the author's copyright. It would be nice if you would provide some credit to the author for writing and providing the article and ASU for providing the article in electronic form.

Can I create a link on my page to the proceedings?

YES!!! You can inlcude a link on your web page to the proceedings as long as the link is NOT displayed within a frame from your site. Framing any page of the Proceedings is a violation of AICP's, ASU's and the author's copyright.

< A HREF="http://www.asu.edu/caed/proceedings00">

Which should appear as follows:

2000 National Planning Conference Proceedings

Or if you choose you can utilize a reference using the site logo as follows:

< TABLE WIDTH=450 COLS=2>
< TD WIDTH=25%>
< IMG SRC="http://www.asu.edu/caed/proceedings00/images/logo00.gif"
ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=90 HEIGHT=91
ALT="2000 National Planning Conference Proceedings">
< TD WIDTH=75%>
< A HREF="http://www.asu.edu/caed/proceedings00">
2000 National Planning Conference Proceedings </A>
</TABLE>

Which should appear as follows:

2000 National Planning Conference Proceedings 1999 National Planning Conference Proceedings

NOTE:!!!

In order for the above links to render and work correctly your system must have a live internet connection. If you are not connected to the internet, no image will display and the links will not work.

This graphic is a small 3k gif file so should load fast and add very little overhead to your site (about 1 seconds load time over a 28K modem line or 2 sencond over a 14K line). If you like, you have our permission to make a copy the logo on your server for purposes of creating a link to the proceedings. You can do this by clicking on this graphic reference . This will load the "Liberty" graphic. You can then save this image by right clicking the image of select File/Save from your browsers menu. Save the logo00.gif file in the same directory as the web page with the link reference. You can then use the following HTML

< IMG SRC="logo00.gif"
ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=90 HEIGHT=91
ALT="1999 National Planning Conference Proceedings">
