Worldwide, sustainability has become a popular concept for planners who are attempting to reconcile the need for economic development with environmental protection. One specific approach to implementing sustainability is the eco-industrial park. This paper describes eco-industrial parks and how they can meet the goals of sustainability.
Extensive research at the former Fort Devens Army Base in Massachusetts revealed that the eco-industrial park can be a very effective means by which a community can meet its goals of sustainability. This paper presents a summary of those findings and recommendations for better tailoring eco-industrial park development to meet community objectives.
